Résumé:
Abstract
The current research investigates the role of extensive reading in enhancing
vocabulary knowledge. For instance, this study was based on the belief that learners face
difficulties when acquiring new words and having poor vocabulary. For this reason our study
is conducted to focus on the benefits and the usefulness of extensive reading in developing
EFL learners’ vocabulary. The study took place at Mohammed El Bachir El Ibrahimi
university, department of English, BBA to achieve the main purpose of the study, a mixed
method approach was adopted. Besides collecting data for this exploratory study, a
questionnaire has been distributed to fifty Two (52) third-year EFL learners as well as an
interview has been done with three (03) teachers from the same university. After the findings
have been collected and analyzed, the obtained results from the students’ questionnaire show
not only the positive effect of extensive reading on vocabulary acquisition but also the
students’ positive attitudes towards reading in general and extensive reading in particular.
While the obtained results from the interview revealed that EFL learners’ lack of vocabulary
can be improved throughout using techniques of reading effectively. Thus, extensive reading
leads to vocabulary development.
