Abstract:
Fish are rich in omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids; the beneficial health effects are widely
recognized. Recently, public confidence has been eroded by a report highlighting the risks
associated with exposure to environmental contaminants such as heavy metals, which are known
to accumulate in fish.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the contamination by heavy metals in fish from the
Mediterranean coast, 5 samples were obtained in 5 states (Algiers, Annaba, Bejaia, Tunis,
Monastir). Cd and Pb were measured in the flesh of the fish in a spectrophotometer. The results
obtained after analysis of our samples, we conclude that: the fish of the Mediterranean coast are
contaminated by cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) because the concentrations of heavy metals in fish
analyzed are superior to standards existing (OJ JECFA and FAO / WHO).
