Abstract

This study examines issues related to data collection in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) using mobile sinks. Wefocusonoptimizingthis collection process to improve energy-efficiency, extend network lifetime, and reduce data collection delay. To address these issues, we propose a novel approach called EDCVP, which stands for Enhanced Data Collection via Visiting Points, wherein the mobile sink adheres to a predetermined trajectory for data collection. EDCVP presents a structured method for selecting visiting points (VPs), locations where the mobile sink halts to collect data. These points are carefully selected to reduce the mobile sink’s tour length and, hence, the data collection latency. We assessed the efficiency of the proposed pro tocol by implementing and comparing it in conjunction with the related protocol, EDEDA, using the NS-3 simulator. A series of experiments was done under different parameter settings. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach relative to EDEDA: ED CVPreduces energy consumption by 4%, prolongs network lifetime by 10.63%, minimizes the mobile sink’s tour length by 88.72% and decreases data collection delay by 140.57%. These improvements confirm the efficiency of EDCVP in enhancing overall network performance in WSNs.
