Item Needs Analysis in English for Academic Purposes (EAP): Case of Doctoral Students at BordjBouArreridj University(جامعة محمد البشير الابراهمي برج يوعريريج, 2024) Mohamadi Amina - • Yakoubi Maroua- • Abadi Khissal Rahma;English for Academic Purposes (EAP)refers to the use and study of English language skills needed for academic contexts, focusing on reading, writing, listening, and speaking at a level appropriate for higher education.As English for Academic Purposes (EAP) is growing very important for post-graduates in Algeria,the aim of the study is investigate doctoral students’ needs in EAP, at Mohammed El Bachir El Ibrahimi in BordjBouArreridj( BBA) in order to set the margins for an EAP course design. The study addresses two main research questions: the language needs and requirements of doctoral students in English for Academic purposes and recommendations for designing a suitable syllabus for doctoral students at Mohammed Elbachir El IbrahimiUniversity.An exploratory descriptive single-site case study design was employed to provide in-depth insights. Utilizing quantitative research method , including a structured questionnaire , data were collected from 15 doctoral students, using purposive sampling. The findings reveal a strong interest among students in learning English, emphasizing the need for a specialized course that integrates general language skillsand academic needs . Key recommendations for syllabus design include focusing onDesigning a course tailored to the specific academic needs of doctoral students involves identifying and addressing the challenges they commonly encounter. By understanding these shortcomings, educators can develop a curriculum that provides targeted support and resources to help students succeed in their doctoral studies. The study addresses two main research questions: the importance of investigating English for nursing in Algeria and recommendations for designing a suitable syllabus for nursing students at BBA institutions. An exploratory single- site case study design was employed to provide in-depth insights. Utilizing both qualitative and quantitative research methods, including a structured questionnaire and focus group discussions, data were collected from 28 nursing students, using purposive sampling. The findings reveal a strong interest among students in learning English, emphasizing the need for a specialized course that integrates general language skills and specific medical terminology. Key recommendations for syllabus design include focusing on medical vocabulary, enhancing communication skills, and employing interactive teaching methods such as role-playing and simulations. The study concludes that a tailored English for Specific Purposes (ESP) course is essential for nursing students to effectively meet the demands of their academic and professional environments. These findings underscore the necessity of developing a comprehensive English syllabus for nursing students in Algeria, facilitating better patient care and professional communication within the healthcare sector. Keywords: English for Specific Purposes (ESP), English for occupational purposes, English for nurses, Needs Analysis.Item Exploring Teachers Corrective Feedback in IELTS Essays Preparation The Case of Silver Tongue private school BBA(جامعة محمد البشير الابراهيمي -برج بوعريريج, 2024) Sara_Hadj_Mebarek, Loubna_Deraredja;تستكشف هذه الدراسة الملاحظات التصحيحية التي يقدمها المعلمون على كتابات الطلاب لمقالات اختبار الآيلتس، وذلك باستخدام نهج مختلط الأساليب. شارك في الدراسة عشرة (10) طلابًا في المستوى المتوسط يستعدون لاختبار الآيلتس وأربعة معلمين تمت مقابلتهم من خلال مقابلة شبه منظمة. يهدف البحث إلى استكشاف قدرة المعلمين على تقديم ملاحظات تصحيحية لتحسين كفاءة كتابة الطلاب في الاستعداد وتحقيق درجة أعلى. تم جمع البيانات من خلال الطرق الكمية (قائمة معايير التقييم) والطرق النوعية (المقابلة شبه المنظمة). تشير نتائج البحث إلى أن ملاحظات المعلمين عززت بشكل ملحوظ كفاءة كتابة الطلاب، مما أدى إلى تنسيق موحد مع عدد أقل من الأخطاء. وأكد المعلمون الذين تمت مقابلتهم النتائج الإيجابية لتقديم الملاحظات مع التأكيد على الدور المحوري في تطوير كتابة الطلاب لاختبار تحضير الآيلتس. يجب أن تستخدم الدراسات المستقبلية تصاميم تجريبية محكومة، وتعدادات طلابية متنوعة، وملاحظات تفصيلية للطلاب، وعينات أكبر، واستراتيجيات لتحسين كتابة مقال الآيلتس. ABSTRACT This study explores the corrective feedback that teachers provide on students' writing of IELTS essays, using a mixed-methods approach. Ten (10) intermediate level students preparing for the IELTS test and four teachers who were interviewed through a semi-structured interview participated in the study. The research aims to explore teachers' ability to provide corrective feedback to improve students' writing proficiency in preparing and achieving a higher grade. Data were collected through quantitative methods (list of evaluation criteria) and qualitative methods (semi-structured interview). Research findings indicate that teachers' feedback significantly enhanced students' writing proficiency, resulting in uniform formatting with fewer errors. The interviewed teachers confirmed the positive results of providing feedback while emphasizing the pivotal role in developing students’ writing for the IELTS preparation test. Abstract This study explores the incorporation of intercultural competence (IC) in English Language Teaching (ELT) practices by Algerian PhD graduate returnees. Specifically, it seeks to gain insight into how these graduate returnees perceive IC and how it influences their teaching practices. Given the significance of IC in promoting effective communication in a globalised world, this research holds particular relevance in the context of Algeria's educational system, which has recently undergone reforms aimed at enhancing English language learning. A mixed-methods research approach was employed, involving the collection of both quantitative and qualitative data through questionnaires administered to 11 respondents and interviews conducted with six participants. The data was analysed using thematic and statistical analysis in order to identify thegraduate returnees' perceptions towards IC, the strategies they employ to incorporate it in their teaching, the challenges they face and their recommendations. The findings reveal that whilegraduate returnees acknowledge the importance of IC, its implementation varies significantly based on individual experiences and institutional support. The study highlights several crucial points: the necessity for ongoing professional development focused on IC, the significance of establishing a supportive institutional environment, and the need to develop curriculum materials that reflect diverse cultural perspectives. Despite encountering challenges such as limited resources and resistance from students and colleagues, the graduate returnees strive to create an inclusive and culturally responsive classroom. This research contributes to the understanding of intercultural competence in ELT in Algeria and provides recommendations for educators, policymakers, and stakeholders to enhance English language education through the integration of IC. Further studies are recommended to explore the long-term impact of these practices on students' language proficiency and cultural awareness. The Algerian government made the decision to imply teaching English at primary school as a school subject. This study aimed to identify the challenges, obstacles, and most crucial problems faced by Algerian EFL primary school teachers. In addition, the study explores the possible solutions that could help EFL primary school teachers keep going in the teaching profession with passion and overcome the different challenges. The researchers used qualitative and quantitative research methods (mixed method). In order to collect data and to answer the research questions, an online questionnaire was administered to EFL primary school teachers selected randomly from different parts of Algeria. The results show that Algerian EFL primary school teachers faced many different challenges inside the classroom, outside the classroom. To ensure that pupils benefit from learning English, the study’s findings recommend that English instruction in primary schools must be enhanced and reevaluated. In this regard, our research is about to understand how teacher-guided instructions affects students essay writing in Third Year License in English language Department at Bordj Bou Arreridj University. The main aim of this study is to investigate the influence of teacher guided-instructions on students writing essays from the perspectives of both teachers and students. It will contribute to a deeper comprehension of instructional strategies in this academic setting already have a certain skill or piece of information, it is assumed that they will acquire it through some type of interaction or process in class to implement in writing essays. The research process was anchored in a mix method approach, incorporating both questionnaire and interview. A large sample of 75 students of third year students and 4 teachers contributed their experiences. The findings show that teacher guidance has a range of effects on students' writing essays, including organization, coherence, the use of information and topic knowledge. The analysis emphasizes the significance of instructor feedback, instructional strategies, and student perspectives in determining writing development. The study provides subtle insights into effective pedagogical strategies for essay writing training, which has important implications for instructors seeking to improve their students' writing essays. The quality of English textbooks plays a pivotal role in shaping students' language proficiency and cognitive development during their formative years. This investigation employs a mixed method approach, combining qualitative and quantitative data collection tools, including interviews, textbook evaluation checklist, and learner’s profile forms. The study evaluates the alignment of the textbook with the curriculum standards, their readability, cultural relevance, and pedagogical effectiveness. Furthermore, it investigates the perceptions of teachers and students regarding the appropriateness of this particular textbook. Preliminary findings suggest that while English textbooks have improved over the years, there remains a need for ongoing assessment and adaptation to better cater to the diverse learning needs of primary school learners. This research provides valuable insights for educational authorities, curriculum developers, and educators to enhance the suitability of English language textbooks in the primary school level, ultimately leading to a more effective English language learning environment. En identifiant les méthodes d'enseignement de la lecture les plus efficaces, cette recherche peut contribuer à améliorer la qualité de l'enseignement de la lecture et à renforcer les compétences en lecture des apprenants de 2AM.L'objectif de ce thème de recherche est d'étudier comment l'utilisation de différentes stratégies de lecture peut améliorer la compréhension de l'écrit chez les apprenants de 2AM. Il s'agit de déterminer quelles sont les stratégies les plus efficaces pour aider ces apprenants à interagir activement avec le texte, à en extraire le sens et à développer leur compréhension globale. It aims to determine which strategies are most effective in helping these learners actively engage with the text, extract meaning from it, and develop their overall comprehension. This research aims to identify teaching methods for reading that enable learners to better understand and analyze written texts, which can contribute to their academic development and school success. Finally, this research is of great importance as reading is a fundamental skill for learners' academic development. A good understanding of written text allows them to analyze and comprehend the information presented in texts, which is essential for their academic success.Item The Socio-cultural Factors Impact on EFL Learners’ Oral Performance Case Study: 4th Year Ms(جامعة محمد البشير الابراهيمي - برج بوعريريج -, 2022) CHADI Amel, BENCHIKH Rania;The present thesis is a total of three chapters aiming to investigate the socio-cultural background of 4MS pupils in speaking English. The social cultural background of the pupils is at the very core of this study and thus success factors of speaking EFL are examined from a socio-cultural vantage. The process of socialisation therefore plays a very important role in shaping the learner‟s own experience in different fields, especially in that of foreign language speaking. It starts at home and extends to later stages of life, as the individual steps out to the world of peers in the neighbourhood and at School. So in all these social institutions, the learner is exposed to a lot of experiences that might affect his or her performance either positively or negatively. First of all, at home, the family‟s economic and educational status affects the socialisation of the learner through preparing him from the early days of childhood to meet the expectations of school life. In our case, improving his oral performance mainly in English. Besides, the impact of the surrounding environment and school is primary important since it is there where young yearners pick up more and more social and cultural views that can enhance their oral performance. Through a questionnaire administered to 65 pupils, this work has been conducted. The results of this study shows that pupils living in culturally and economically impoverished environments have a bad oral performance in English. This failure is not only due to the family but also a host of factors such as the neighbourhood as well
